THE ART OF LISTENING


Yes listening is an art. This art has been lost by many people today, Instead of giving others time to formulate a response, we immediately re-phrase the question or comment and answer it ourselves.  We don’t give ourselves the opportunity because we never stop talking.

Another problem is that when we are in a conversation we are so busy formulating our reply that we start assuming what they will say.  Added to this, as we formulate an answer we miss half the conversation.

Don’t hijack a conversation. Don’t start speaking until the other person has finished, don’t finish their sentences for them. When the other person has finished talking count to five before you start talking.  Be smart and give the other person time to acknowledge your comment or statement. 

When you meet with a client, listen to everything they have to say.  You need to hear every word, watch their non-verbal body language.  Notice the changes in their voice, if they raise or lower their volume.  Watch for the non-verbal hints. 

People respect a good listener.  Its shows when you listen well. You will get respect from those you are talking to.
